So you work around it instead. The longer route. The postponed appointment. The excuse you give for missing the wedding abroad or visiting loved ones. Each time you avoid the situation, the fear takes a little more control over how you live, until whole parts of your life are being quietly rearranged around something you can't even explain to people who don't have it.
A phobia isn't weakness, and it isn't a character flaw. It's a learned protective response, and learned responses are open to change.
Why willpower hasn't worked
Your threat response fires in milliseconds, before conscious thought even arrives. The amygdala, your brain's alarm system, reacts first and reasons later. It's the same mechanism that pulls your hand off a hot pan before you've registered the heat: fast, automatic, and completely uninterested in what your logical mind has to say.
Telling yourself everything is fine changes nothing, because the message never reaches the part of your mind holding the fear in place. You don't have a willpower problem. You have a pattern held in the automatic, protective part of your mind, and change happens at the level where that pattern actually lives, not at the level where you already know better.
When logic and emotion disagree, emotion wins, every time. So rather than fighting emotion with logic, hypnotherapy works with it directly.
Who's guiding you through it
I'm Andrew Arbuthnot. I've worked with hundreds of clients over many years in practice, and fears and phobias make up a large part of what I do. I'm not here to tell you your fear is irrational, you know that already, better than anyone, and it's frustrating. I'm here to work with the part of your mind that's holding it in place, so it finally lets go.
What changes
This isn't about gritting your teeth through the thing you're afraid of. It's about the fear no longer needing to be gritted through at all. The flight you book without the three days of dread first, or the drink. The appointment you keep without rearranging your week around it. The wedding abroad you actually go to.
You don't need to convince yourself the fear is irrational, you already know that. You need the automatic part of your mind to finally get the message. That's where I come in.
