The Motivation Myth: Why Waiting to Feel Ready Keeps You Stuck

There is a peculiar lie we tell ourselves about motivation, one that sounds so reasonable it is rarely questioned: "I'll do it when I feel ready." We treat motivation as a prerequisite for action, rather like insisting you must feel hungry before you are allowed to eat.

I have spent 24 years watching intelligent, capable people explain why they cannot possibly start their business until they feel more confident, cannot begin exercising until they feel more energetic, cannot make that sales call until they feel less anxious. They are waiting for an emotional state to arrive before taking action, rather like waiting for a bus that is not on the timetable.

The backwards brain

Here is the uncomfortable truth: motivation follows action more often than it precedes it. When you take action, any action, your brain receives feedback: signals from your muscles, visual confirmation of movement, changes in your environment. This feedback triggers the neurochemical responses we interpret as motivation, confidence or energy.

In other words, you do not run because you feel energetic. You feel energetic because you run. You do not make sales calls because you feel confident. You feel confident because you make sales calls.

The motivation you are waiting for is on the other side of the action you are avoiding.

Getting unstuck

Knowing this rarely fixes it, because the waiting pattern is not a conscious choice. It is a subconscious loop, and intelligent people build particularly convincing versions of it.

Hypnotherapy and NLP change the loop itself, so starting stops requiring a fight. If you have been waiting to feel ready for months or years, that is the signal the pattern needs outside help. A free consultation is the low-stakes way to begin.
